Tensions in Kashmir follow a June decision to transfer land to a Hindu Shrine. Muslims saw this as a settlement plan meant to alter the region’s religious demographic. When the land transfer was rescinded, Hindus protested in Jammu, a predominantly Hindu city. Kashmir has been divided between Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan since 1947, with both nations claiming the region in its entirety.
