India: Soldiers and Police Kill 3 Protestors, Related to Hindu shrine

SRINAGAR – Soldiers and police shot and killed three at a protest by Muslims demanding an end to Indian rule in Kashmir on August 24, AP reported on August 25. Indian authorities have arrested the top separatist leaders, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omer Farooq and Mohammed Yasin Malik. Tensions in Kashmir follow a June decision to transfer land to a Hindu Shrine. Muslims saw this as a settlement plan meant to alter the region’s religious demographic. When the land transfer was rescinded, Hindus protested in Jammu, a predominantly Hindu city. Kashmir has been divided between Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan since 1947, with both nations claiming the region in its entirety.
