Malaysia: Royalty Defers Decision Concerning Conversion of Minors

KUALA LUMPUR – On June 29 Malaysia’s king and state sultans announced that they will consult Islamic authorities before approving an amendment that affects whether or not a parent may convert his/her children without the approval of the spouse, AP reported on July 1.  The amendment comes as a response to cases such as one in early 2009 when a Hindu man converted to Islam along with his children, claimed sole custody of them in a Sharia court, which  then left his wife with limited legal recourse.
