ALGIERS – The government of Algeria has created a television and radio station to promote Sufism in an attempt to combat what it views as more violent forms of Islam, Reuters reported on July 8.  Sufism is generally conceived as a form of Islam less interested in politics than in the immediate spiritual needs of its practicing community.
