TEHRAN – On June 9 the singer Mohsen Namjoo was sentenced in absentia to a five-year jail term for ridiculing the Koran in a song, a sentence his brother has announced his family intends to appeal, AFP reported on July 20. In 2008 Namjoo apologized in a letter addressed to his mother, to clerics and to the Iranian people for a song he has claimed was never meant for public release.
