Slovakia: Mormons Face Opposition from Catholic Bishops

The International Herald Tribune reports that Catholic bishops in Slovakia are urging the Catholic faithful not to support the registration of a Mormon church in the country, saying it would be a betrayal of the Catholic Church.  In early September the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked all Slovaks “who care about religious liberty” to add their signatures to the registration petition.  Slovakia requires 20,000 signatures before a church can be legally registered; currently, there are only about 100 Mormons in Slovakia, a predominantly Catholic country of 5.4 million people.
