Iran: Convert Released from Jail

Compass Direct reports that Hamid Pourmand, an Iranian convert to Christianity, was unexpectedly released in late July after serving only 22 months of his three-year prison sentence. No reason was given for the decision, although he was warned that attending church services could cause him to be returned to prison to finish the remaining 14 months. Pourmand, a former colonel in the Iranian army, was one of 85 people detained by secret police at an Assemblies of God church conference, where he was serving as a volunteer lay pastor. He was charged with concealing his conversion from the Iranian army and tried for proselytizing and apostasy.
