Pakistan: Christian Teen Accused of Blasphemy

Faisalabad, Pakistan – Compass Direct reports that a 17-year-old Christian, Shahid Masih, is currently in jail on charges of blasphemy for allegedly tearing pages from a book which contained verses of the Koran.  If convicted, the penalty for blasphemy is life in prison, but acquittals often draw the ire of Islamic fanatics who take justice into their own hands.  Since Pakistan’s blasphemy laws were instituted in the 1980s, Christians have accounted for 25% of all cases, despite the fact that they make up only 2% of Pakistan’s population.
