Azerbaijan: Christian Families Encounter State Interference in Naming Their Children

Compass Direct reports that families face difficulties in obtaining birth certificates for children with “Christian” names, such as in the recent case of Ilya Eyvazov.  Ilya’s parents, who are Baptist, have been unable to register his June 18th birth because his name (the Russian form of “Elijah”) is a “Christian” name.  Without a birth certificate, children are unable to attend school, travel abroad, or receive health care.  The regional registration office, while not admitting this practice outright, has stated that it occasionally “suggests” that parents give their children more Azeri names.
