Iran: Cleric Threatened for Speaking in Favor of Separation of Church and State

Radio Free Europe reports that a Shi’ite cleric, Ayatollah Seyyed Hossein Kazemeyni Boroujerdi, has accused Iranian officials of persecuting him and his followers for questioning the close relationship of church and state in Iran.  Boroujerdi, who has been imprisoned and tortured several times in the past 14 year, reports that he has been threatened, and some of his followers have been harassed, tortured, pressured to campaign against him or fired from their jobs.  Boroujerdi’s case is not unique – clerics who promoted the separation of church and state in Iran have been persecuted before – but he continues to preach that real Islam is “free of political ornaments” and has appealed for help to both Benedict XVI and the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana.
