Uzbekistan: Government Shuts Down Charities Suspected of “Missionary Activity”

Forum 18 reports that the Uzbek government has shut down about a dozen charities which provide humanitarian aid and has forced all foreign workers to leave the country, due to “suspected missionary activity”.  Though foreign religious charities may legally operate under Uzbek law, many of them have been forced to close this year, to the extent that there is only one Islamic charity still allowed to function in a country which is 88% Muslim.
