Pakistan: Man Deemed “Mentally Unfit” to Stand Trial for Blasphemy

AsiaNews reports that Sohail Masih, who was awaiting trial for blasphemy, was released from jail on October 6 after his lawyer was able to have him declared “mentally deranged” and unfit to stand trial.  He had spent almost a year in prison from the time fellow villagers reported they had seen him burning pages of the Quran in November 2005.  Masih’s parents left the village shortly after their son’s arrest for fear of reprisals by Muslim extremists.
