Turkey: Archaeologist Acquitted of Insulting Religion Based on Her Work

The Associated Press reports that Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, a 92-year-old Turkish archaeologist was tried, and acquitted, for “insulting people based on their religion”.  Cig, an expert on ancient Sumerian civilization, had suggested that a predecessor of the Islamic headscarf was worn by Sumerian priestesses responsible for initiating young men into sex.   Had she been convicted, she could have spent up to 1 ½ years in prison.
