Eritrea: Gospel Singer Released from Prison

Amnesty International reports that Helen Berhane, an Eritrean gospel singer, was released in late October from the Mai Serwa army camp, where she had been held for the past two and a half years without charges or trial. Berhane was one of a group of 2,000 detainees, all members of evangelical movements banned by the Eritrean government. During most of her stay at the prison, she was confined to a metal shipping container and tortured several times in an effort by authorities to make her recant her faith.
