Azerbaijan: Journalists Arrested for ‘Insulting the Prophet’

MosNews reports that the Azeri Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal case against two employees of the small-circulation newspaper Senet, after the publication ran an article “Europe and us,” which compared European and Muslim values.  After the article was deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammed, Rafik Tagi, the article’s author, and Samir Sedagetoglu, the paper’s editor, were charged with “using one’s position to incite ethnic, racial and religious hatred.”  The government is now working to protect the two journalists after protestors denounced the article and called for Tagi’s death.  A conviction for either man would carry a sentence of three to five years in prison.
