Kazakhstan: Hare Krishna Risk Property Confiscation

Forum 18 reports that members of the former Soviet Union’s only Hare Krishna community, who inhabit an 118-acre farm near the southern city of Almaty, are at risk of having their property confiscated by the Kazakh government.  Local officials have made tried several times to destroy the commune, including an attempt to bulldoze the property in April 2006.  The state maintains that the issue at heart is an economic dispute over the proper use of the land, but despite the fact that Kazakhstan’s Religious Affairs Committee has set up a state commission to investigate the dispute, the Krishna community fears the government will eventually confiscate the property.
