Somalia: Autonomous Region of Puntland Adopts Shari’a Law

UN Integrated Regional Information Networks reports that the autonomous region of Puntland, in northeastern Somalia have decided to adopt Shari’a law following pressure from Islamic leaders and the support of local elders.  The Union of Islamic Courts, which controls the capital of Mogadishu, as well as much of south and central Somalia, has long pressured Puntland to adopt Shari’a.  A committee comprised of elders, religious leaders, government and laymen will be appointed to decide how Shari’a should be implemented in the region.
