Turkish Converts on Trial for Insulting Turkishness, Inciting Hatred

The Associated Press reports that two Turkish Christian converts, Turan Topal and Hakan Tastan, were put on trial November 23 for “insulting Turkishness” and inciting religious hatred against Islam.  The men are accused of protesting against Turkey’s compulsory military service, of calling Islam “a primitive and fabricated” religion and of telling potential converts that Turks would remain barbarians as long as they practiced Islam.  Both men deny the accusations, but could spend up to nine years in jail if convicted.
