Yemen: Editor Jailed for Insulting the Prophet

The Australian reports that Kamal al-Aalafi, editor-in-chief of an independent weekly, was sentenced to a year in jail by a Yemeni court for reprinting the cartoons of Mohammed which appeared last September in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The court also ordered the closure of al-Aalafi’s newspaper, al-Rai al-Aam, for a period of six months.  Though al-Aalafi is the first to be sentenced, the editors of the Yemen Observer and al-Hurriya face similar charges.
