Somalia: Union of Islamic Courts Mandates Islamic Prayer in Bulo Burto

The Associated Press reports that in Bulo Burto, southern Somalia, the Union of Islamic Courts has issued an edict in an attempt to force residents to adhere to a more Islamic lifestyle, or risk severe punishment. The edict, which applies only to Bulo Burto and went into effect on December 9, requires the townspeople to pray five times a day and forbids business and people in the streets during prayer times. Those who do not follow the new law risk being beheaded as punishment.
