Kazakhstan: Continued Trouble for Hare Krishna Community

Forum 18 reports that the existence of Kazakhstan’s Hare Krishna community, whose commune was partially demolished at the end of November, may be further threatened by government attempts to de-register the community, following what appeared to be requests for re-registration, despite a lack of legal necessity for re-registration. Regional religious affairs officials recently visited the compound to collect information on the community, with specific questions about the community’s source of financial support and the age, class and nationality of its members. Kazakhstan, a member of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, has ignored OSCE’s statements of concern on the subject of the Hare Krishna.
