Eritrea: Government Exerts Tighter Controls on Orthodox Church

Compass Direct reports that the Eritrean government has made new efforts to consolidate fiscal and personnel control of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, demanding that all tithes be deposited into a government account and limiting the number of priests. The government has set quotas for each parish across the country, and has asked any ‘extra’ priests to report for military training.
