Pakistan: Supreme Court Blocks Islamic Morality Bill

The BBC reports that Pakistan’s Supreme Court blocked an Islamic morality bill from being enforced, instructing the provincial governor in the North West Frontier Province not to sign the legislation. The bill, which would allow for religious police in the streets and enforce strict dress codes for men and women, is opposed by Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf, who has described the bill as a breach of human rights. The Supreme Court struck down a similar piece of legislation last year, saying it violated the constitution.
