Egypt: Bahais Denied Recognition as an Official Religion

Arab News reports Egypt’s Supreme Administrative Court ruled December 16 that Bahais had no right to state their religion on identification documents, saying that the Egyptian constitution promoted freedom of religion only for Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Though a lower court had previously ruled in favor of the couple who brought the case, the judge who handed down the verdict stated that Islamic jurists had determined that the Bahai faith did not fall into one of the three recognized religions, and termed Bahai “apostates of Islam”.
