Uzbekistan: Two Muslims Jailed After Organizing Koran Competition for Children

Reuters reports that two men in Uzbekistan have been sentenced to jail for suspected participation in the Wahabi religious movement. Shoakmal Nosirov and Farkhod Muminov were arrested and sentenced to nine and seven years in prison, respectively, after organizing a trip for 50 children to take part in a competition to demonstrate knowledge of the Koran. Uzbekistan tolerates only a state-approved version of Islam and frequently applies the “Wahabi” label to dissidents.
