India: Inter-religious Marriage Prohibited in Madhya Pradesh

Nerve News reports that the government of Madhya Pradesh refused permission for an inter-religious couple to marry, claiming that such a marriage would inspire too many “conversions” in the state. Meena Gond, a tribal woman, and Peter Abraham, a Christian man, applied for marriage in October, and the normal forty-day waiting period passed without anyone filing complaints. However, the district official refused to perform the marriage, claiming that Abraham, a rickshaw driver, had used money to lure Gond into marriage and would force her to convert after she married him.
