India: State of Himachal Pradesh Passes Anti-Conversion Legislation

Zee News reports that Himachal Pradesh became the latest Indian state to ban forced religious conversions, passing an anti-conversion bill on December 29.  Himachal Pradesh is the first state in which the Congress Party has introduced anti-conversion legislation, as bills in other states have been introduced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which professes to promote the values of the country’s Hindu majority and views such legislation as a necessary measure to safeguard India’s religious identity. Under the new law, those who allege forced conversion will be allowed to return to their previous confession within a month.
