Egypt: Blogger on Trial for Criticizing Islam

The Associated Press reports that Abdel Kareem Nabil, an Egyptian blogger, will be put on trial in Cairo on January 25th, on charges of inciting sedition, insulting Islam, harming national unity and insulting the president. Nabil, who has been in detention since November, is the latest in a string of bloggers to be arrested, but the first to be put on trial. A former law student of al-Azhar University, Nabil often wrote critically about religion, conservative Muslims and religious institutions.
