Somalia: Conflict Results in Difficulties for Kenya’s Muslims

Reuters reports that conflict in neighboring Somalia has led to the harassment of Muslims in Kenya, where people fear that an abrupt change in the treatment of Muslims is a sign that their government is trying to win support from Washington. Kenyan Muslims have criticized the government’s actions in first initiating dialogue with Somali Islamists, then treating them as enemies, and report that Muslim youths are currently being held near the Kenyan-Somali border and are denied access to lawyers. Both Muslim and non-Muslim Kenyans affirm that no divisions along religious lines existed prior to the conflict.
