Moldova: Legal Status Evades Minority Religious Communities

Forum 18 reports that the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, the Ukrainian Orthodox Kiev Patriarchate and various Muslim and Protestant organizations continue to be denied legal status in the predominantly Eastern Orthodox country of Moldova. Few communities have been able to secure registration in the past few years; the only successful application came from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and then only after international pressure. Religious minorities say that harassment and interruptions of services are common, and are concerned that a new law on religions, rumored to be passed in February, may complicate their problems.
