Zimbabwe: Religious Leaders Denied Freedom of Assembly

The Zimbabwe Standard reports that riot police in the city of Kadoma, Zimbabwe, arrested and detained eight pastors and a journalist at an ecumenical gathering on January 26. The pastors, along with a congregation of 400, came from different churches around the country and had assembled for the opening of Christian Alliance, a non-denominational organization which promotes non-violent advocacy work.

Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms the right to “manifest [one’s] religion or belief” “…either alone or in community with others and in public or private”.
