Germany: Government Abandons Plans to Outlaw Swastika Across the European Union

Deutsche Welle reports that following protests from European Hindu groups, Germany has abandoned plans to outlaw the swastika in the European Union. Hindus objected that the swastika has been in use as a religious symbol for thousands of years prior to its use by the Nazis. According to Reuters, Ramesh Kallidai of the Hindu Forum of Britain agreed that in certain contexts, it was correct to condemn the swastika, though its use in Hindu ceremonies should be both understood and permitted.
