Pakistan: Ahmadis Charged with “Spreading Religious Hatred”

Reuters reports that police in Pakistan have charged five members of Pakistan’s Ahmadi community, including two children, with spreading religious hatred for reading and distributing children’s magazines that were deemed to contain “offensive material” and “spread hatred against other religions”, though The Daily Times reports that the articles in the magazine discussed only Ahmadi beliefs. Police registered a case against the five, who are currently free on pre-arrest bails. Pakistan’s Ahmadis are classified as “non-Muslims” and prevented from preaching or spreading their faith by a 1974 constitutional amendment.
