Malaysia: Man Accidentally Raised as Muslim Attempts to Convert

Reuters reports that a Chinese man raised as an ethnic Malay may encounter problems in renouncing the faith he was brought up in, as it is uncertain if those the government considers Muslim can convert to another religion. Zulhaidi Omar was raised by an ethnic Malay family after being accidentally switched with another baby at the hospital, but since proving his true identity through DNA tests, would like to adopt a Chinese name and convert to Buddhism. Malaysia considers all ethnic Malays to be Muslim, however, and it remains unclear whether Omar, legally considered Malay, will be allowed to convert.
