Azerbaijan: Government to Consider New Religion Law

Interfax reports that a new religious law which would allow tighter government controls on missionary activity is planned for discussion this year in Azerbaijan’s parliament. Parliamentary officials say the current law on “Freedom of Religion”, which dates from 1992, is not compatible with the current constitution (1995) and does not allow the government to effectively address aspects of the present religious situation in the country, specifically missionary activity by “unconventional religious movements”.
