Malaysia: Religious Police to Hire Spies

The Associated Press reports that Islamic religious police from Terengganu State, in northeastern Malaysia, plan to enlist spies who would keep them informed of violations of Islamic law by Muslims living in the area. Though this practice has been denounced by Islamic leaders in other Malaysian states, the spies would receive payment for any information they could provide to the religious police. The police, who have also targeted non-Muslims in the past, hope that additional information will help them identify violators more accurately.
