Moldova: ECHR Fines Government for Violations of Religious Freedom

Forum 18 reports that on February 27, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) fined the Moldovan government 12,000 euros, following repeated refusals of the State Service for Religious Denominations to register the Moldovan True Orthodox Church. Moldova has been fined once before, in 2002, for refusing legal status to the Bessarabian Orthodox Church. The ECHR judgment, which found the Moldovan government guilty of failure to ensure protection of property and effective remedy as well as violations of religious freedom, will be final in three months if no appeals are filed.
