Uzbekistan: Pastor Sentenced to Four Year Exile

Forum 18 reports that a regional criminal court in eastern Uzbekistan sentenced Dmitry Shestakov, a protestant pastor, to four years in exile within Uzbekistan for “illegal organization of social or religious organizations”, “inciting ethnic, racial or religious hatred” and “distributing materials containing ideas of religious extremism”. Observers reported several irregularities at the trial, and noted that officials intensified their harassment of Shestakov following the conversions of ethnic Uzbeks in May 2006.
