Algeria: Government Considers Barring Imams from Political Life

Magharebia reports that the Algerian government is again considering a measure to prevent imams from becoming active in politics, saying that anyone who wishes to be involved in political affairs must cut ties to the mosques. The move is championed by some moderate imams, thought it has elicited a strong reaction from political parties who explain that as Islam is the state religion, having imams in politics presents no conflict.
