Egypt: Government Suspends Nominations of Female Spiritual Leaders

ADNKronos International reports that Egypt’s ministry of religious affairs has suspended all nominations of female spiritual leaders, murshidat, reportedly for fear they will encourage other women to wear the niqab. Murshidat are meant to provide advices on various faith issues, specifically those relating to women, sexuality and family, and serve as imams in the women’s areas of the mosques. Egypt only began to appoint murshidat in December; there are currently about 50 serving the country.
