China: Defying Authorities, Tibetans Gather to Pray

Radio Free Asia reports that on March 21, Chinese authorities detained one woman and assaulted another in Lhasa, the capital of China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, where both were taking part in a ceremony which involved offerings and prayer for the Dalai Lama. Tibetans are forbidden from taking part in large religious gatherings, but on this particular day a crowd of about 500 participated in defiance of the Chinese authorities. The ceremony was shut down in the afternoon, with “several hundred police” fanning out throughout Lhasa.
