India: Mass Conversion After Dalits Barred from Temple

BNI reports that a thousand Dalits (low-caste Hindus) converted to Buddhism in protest after being barred from a temple in Orissa, India. Dalits claimed that despite an order from the local high court to allow them into the temple, the district administration had arrived at an agreement with the upper castes which prevented them from entering. Local administration described the conversions as a political move, saying that people were “unnecessarily trying to create tension in the area”.
