Iran: Citizens Punished for Failure to Wear Islamic Dress

Agence France-Presse reports that at least fifty women in Iran were prevented from boarding flights on Sunday after airport police deemed their outfits to be in violation of Islamic dress codes. Police at airports alone have thus far handed out more than 17,000 warnings and have sent 80 women and 50 men to judicial authorities for various clothing violations. The number of dress code violations generally increase as summer approaches and the weather warms, but police have reportedly been especially harsh in enforcing the code this year.
