Malaysia: Muslim Detained for Marriage to Hindu

The Turkish Daily News reports that in late April, Malaysia’s Islamic Religious Department, known as “Jais”, removed Najeera farvinli Mohamed Jalali, a Muslim woman, from Magendran Sababathy, her Hindu husband, saying that the marriage was illegal under the country’s laws. Though the couple had married three years ago in a Hindu ceremony, Jais claimed that they lacked any “relevant marriage documents” and that they acted within the law in removing the woman and placing her in a religious rehabilitation center. In Malaysia, Muslims are subject to Shari’a courts in areas of limited family jurisdiction, such as marriage and inheritance, while non-Muslims are governed by civil courts.
