Belarus: Religious Groups Petition to Change Religion Law

Forum 18 reports that various religious groups have banded together in Belarus to protest the country’s 2002 law on religions, calling it a violation of the rights of all people, including atheists. The petitioners claim that the country’s restrictions on freedom of assembly and extensive registration procedures violate their rights to freedom of speech and belief. The Belarusian Orthodox Church, however, which had lent its support to the law, rejected any connection with the petition and ordered Orthodox Christians not to take part. At least 50,000 signatures are needed before the Constitutional Court will consider a petition to change a law.
