Uzbekistan: Regional Government Tries to Exert Further Control over Religions

Forum 18 reports that the regional government in the area of Andijon, Uzbekistan, has issued orders to religious leaders in the region to reign in their congregations in order to prevent undesirable actions such as missionary activity, and to allow for the government’s closer observation of religious gatherings. In violation of their international obligations and of the country’s constitution (see Article 61), the government of Uzbekistan frequently interferes in the affairs of religious communities in the country.
