Pakistan: Government Responds to Criticism of Blasphemy Laws

The Daily Times reports that the government of Pakistan is set to consider measures which would curtail abuse of the country’s blasphemy laws, following a meeting with European Union officials. Pakistani officials have defended the laws, rejecting concerns that they encourage persecution of minorities. Though the government recognized that abuses of the laws had occurred, they maintained that most of the cases had been brought against Muslims, who are estimated to make up 97% of the population.
