Tibet: Abbot Loyal to the Dalai Lama Forced to Resign

Radio Free Asia reports that Khenpo Tsanor, abbot of the Dungkyab monastery in the Golog Tibetan Prefecture, was forced to step down as head of the monastery after he refused to sign documents prepared by the Chinese government which condemned the Dalai Lama. Despite Chinese officials’ threats to shut down the monastery and the chance that he will have to stand trial for his actions, the abbot said he had no intention to denounce Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader. Local religious officials have confirmed that the region is currently undergoing a re-education campaign, with all monasteries in the region set to become “model monasteries”, housing only monks loyal to China.
