Germany: Court Upholds Headscarf Ban for Teachers

The Associated Press reports that a regional court in Dusseldorf, Germany, has upheld a ban on headscarves for teachers in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, following a case brought by a teacher who was refused employment because she was “not prepared” to enter a classroom without her headscarf. The presiding judge opined that a headscarf is an expression of religious conviction, and that regional law did not permit religious expression that would “infringe on the state’s neutrality” towards pupils.
