UN Human Rights Council Adopts Resolution on Religious Defamation

GENEVA – The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on religious defamation by a vote of 21-10, the Associated Press reported on March 27. The resolution, which was put forward by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), is intended to protect all religions from defamation, though the resolution specifically makes reference only to Islam “and other divine religions” which go unnamed. Several EU countries voted against the resolution, explaining that they were concerned that religious defamation laws would be used to limit freedom of speech. The full text of the resolution can be found on website of the office of the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights.
