China: Government Arrests Bishop of Underground Church

HEBEI – Security agents detained Bishop Julius Jia Zhiguo, 73, of Zhending, a bishop of an underground Catholic church this Monday, AP reported on August 25. Bishop Jia is the head of the Cardinal Kung Foundation, which aims to promote the Roman Catholic Church in China. The foundation’s members said that they do not know where Jia is being detained, while Chinese officials deny any involvement in Jia’s disappearance. Jia has been repeatedly detained by security forces. China broke ties with the Vatican in 1951 and Catholics are only permitted to worship in government-controlled churches. Despite such restrictions, millions remain loyal to the pope and worship in secret despite the danger of being detained or imprisoned.
